Subscribing to websites is helpful if you regularly read more than a few sites; and it’s not just websites, you can subscribe to forums and comments too. RSS: How do I subscribe to afterbang?

Subscribing to afterbang, and other sites, is easy.

The first thing you need to do is get yourself a reader. They’re free and there are loads to choose from. Personally, I use Google Reader – it’s easy because I use google mail etc. Once you’ve chosen a reader, you’re ready to start subscribing. Here’s a step by step guide for the afterbang site, other sites will be the same.

Step 1: Click on a “subscribe” link

Most often, you’re looking for one of the orange RSS buttons/graphics. However, regular links take you to the same place. The following shows two examples from this site:

Step 2: Copy the URL from the feed page

Clicking on a “subscribe” link will take you to the RSS feed page. You don’t need to worry about what this page is, or ever use it again. What you do need to do is copy the URL from the address bar – in this case, that’s: feed://feeds.feedburner.com/afterbang

Step 3: Add a subscription to your reader

Open up your reader. Somewhere obvious will be the option to add a subscription. The image below shows an example from google reader. To add the subscription you need the URL that you copied from the RSS feed page…

Step 4: Read fresh content in your reader

That’s all there is to it, you’ve successfully subscribed! All you need to do now is read the new content produced by the websites you subscribe to. This next image shows my google reader with a few subscriptions. The stuff that you haven’t yet read will be highlighted for you. There are some other nice little features that come along with readers, but you can pick those up as you go. In a nutshell, this is all you need to get started…
