Introducing Two Guest Voices to Afterbang
I like to write about snowboarding, whether that be my own experiences on the mountain or my views and opinions on certain aspects of snowboarding. I also like to read and learn about how others are enjoying snowboarding. Over the last month or so I’ve exchanged emails with a couple of snowboarders who also want to share their experiences, to write about snowboarding…
I’m interested in what these guys are doing this season, their choices. I’m interested in their views on snowboarding. I think others will be interested too. So, from time to time during the season, I’ll be adding some posts from them to the afterbang blog. I’m looking forward to it…
Introducing Kenny Gilbertson
I’m Kenny Gilbertson, UK born and bred but currently checking out what the slopes of Chile and North America have to offer. I have had a passion for snowboarding since I first tried it a few years back while visiting a friend in France.
At the time I was racing semi-professionally in the British Superbike series, so finding time (and money) to get away to the snow was rare and I really didn’t get to do it as much as I wanted.
When the economy in the UK decided to take a slump, so did a large portion of sponsorship that helped fund my racing. So at the end of 2011, with minimal hope for raising the money needed to race the following season, I decided to call it a day.
This life changing decision was quickly followed by another; I quit my job in the city as a quantity surveyor and moved to Whistler, BC, to work as a snowboard instructor for the season.
One amazing season later I decided I didn’t want to stop there, so I am going back to Whistle for a second. I have spent the last 6 weeks in Chile catching up with my girlfriend and checking out some of the resorts here, and at the end of the month (October) I fly back to Canada.
Much like Gavin I enjoy to write, and while I mainly write for fun and to document my experiences, it is nice to know people read some of it. Even better if they enjoy it and can benefit from it, so helping contribute to afterbang seems like a great idea.
Here’s to an epic season to come!
Introducing Xav Barsky
I am Xav (pronounced ‘Zav’) but my friends call me Xivvy (pronounced ‘Zivvy’). I’m 19 years old. Over the course of this year I’ve decided I want to become a snowboard instructor. This winter I am heading out to France for the season; working in a hotel and snowboarding whenever I get a free minute. Oh oui!
It’s my first step toward becoming an instructor.
The destination is Alpe d’Huez and I leave on the 29th of November. It just so happens that Alpe d’Huez is the resort where I first tried snowboarding. It’s nice for it all to come ’round full circle.
So far, I have (only) clocked up 4 weeks of shredding, in 5 years. I’ve assembled my first set-up, ready for the winter: Capita Totally F’KN Awesome board, Union Force Bindings and a pair of Vans Cirro boots. I want to leave room ro progress.
I have also saved up and added a GoPro. I have a interest in film making. In my ‘pursuit of powder’ this winter, I’d like to start by making some edits, see where that goes. To document some of my progression and the fun that surrounds this brilliant sport.
I am a keen writer. Before the call of the mountains, journalism was my primary aspiration. I want to continue to write. Writing for an online audience on an established blog is a good way to drive this – and I might be able to add another dimension to the afterbang project.
